Current activity: I am currently in the Antibacterial Molecular Sciences department at Pfizer, where I hold the title of Research Fellow and run a laboratory whose focus is twofold: the biochemistry of bacterial topoisomerases and their small molecule inhibitors, and the development of high throughput screens for inhibitors of novel antibacterial targets.

Personal: After graduating from Wayne State University in 1985, I began postdoctoral studies in herpes simplex virus molecular biology in the laboratory of Joe Glorioso at the University of Michigan. Two years later, I married Janice Weber (formerly Placey), who was also a Department of Immunology and Microbiology graduate (M.S. with Steve Lerman, 1986). While I was doing my postdoctoral studies, Jan worked in the laboratory of Francis Collins at the University of Michigan. In 1989, I accepted an assistant professor position in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at Penn State University, and established a research program that focused on understanding the molecular mechanisms of genetic recombination and gene expression in herpes simplex virus. In 1993, an offer from Parke-Davis Pharmaceutical Research in Ann Arbor convinced me to leave the academic world and return to Michigan to establish and head a program in herpesvirus antiviral discovery. Following the acquisition of Parke-Davis by Pfizer in 2000 and the relocation of its antiviral research programs to other Pfizer sites, I joined the newly formed Antibacterial Molecular Sciences department. Jan and I currently reside in Canton with our two children, Rebecca (age 14) and Brandon (age 10).
