Current activity: I'm back at Wayne State where I'm still trying
to find the cure for EAE! I tried getting involved in fundamentalist
immunology as a post-doc, but always came back to my favorite system
of systems. Along the way, I even developed a few EAE subsystems of
my very own to exploit scientifically.
After earning my Ph.D. in the Lewis rat system in Dr. Swanborg's lab
in 1993, I took a working tour of the West Coast at:
(1) UCLA - An urban jungle in the sun. Brazilianized economy. You're
either rich or poor. There's no middle ground. I'm a survivor of the
1994 Los Angeles Northridge earthquake, the most expensive natural disaster
in U.S. history! Quite some jolts!
(2) La Jolla Institute for Allergy and Immunology - An institute established
with the largesse of Kirin Breweries, a Japanese beer company. I lived
a mere half a block from a beach lined by 40 ft sheer cliffs. Only the
locals know the secret passageways down, making it one of the best "private"
ocean beaches in California. Nice!
(3) Oregon Health & Science University in Portland - Upscale backwoods
living of sorts. At home, a family of deer grazed just outside of my
windows. When in season, you can pick wild berries until you drop. The
Pacific Northwest is becoming something of an intellectual Mecca. The
Writer's Guild likes it. Bring your own money however. Oregon doesn't
have much of an economy of its own.
Right now, I'm in a space carved out for me in The Good Dr. Tse's mouse
EAE lab. The tour of the West Coast was nice, but maybe I should have
returned home a little sooner.
Personal: Still a confirmed bachelor. My brother and his wife
have provided me with two nieces.
