Current academic activity: Most of my time the past two years has been devoted to my work at the Karmanos Cancer center. I was named to head both the Immunotherapy Labs and the Center for Cellular Technologies. Together these labs serve to conduct clinical trials in a variety of fields. The labs are involved in all aspects of the trial: recruitment, FDA submissions, drug/cell production, immune monitoring, and data management. The types of trials that we conduct include:
1: dendritic cell vaccination for cancer (ovarian, multiple myeloma, brain),
2: stem cell plasticity studies (repair of non-fusable bone breaks, repair of spinal cord injury, repair of vascular damage due to complication of diabetes) and
3: immune response (use of macrophages to improve outcome in spinal cord injury)

My immunology laboratory is conducting gene therapy studies in autoimmune models of diabetes and multiple sclerosis. We are also exploring the biochemistry of alternatively spliced forms of several cytokine genes and their apparent inhibitory behavior. Smaller, but no less important projects are conducted in collaboration with Dr. Tom Holland (Dept. of Immunology-gene therapy), Dr. Galli Hillman (Dept. of Radiation Oncology-immune response to tumors) and Dr. James Tucker (Dept. of Biology-detection of alternatively spliced cytokine RNA transcripts)

Personal: I am married to Jeannette Thai, and we have a son Jonathan who is nearly 2 1/2 (see picture below). We live in Northville in a house that is under almost constant renovation. My wife is an OBY/GYN in private practice, also in the Northville area. She is partnered with Bernd Barthel's wife so every couple of months I get to hear his famous jokes at a social gathering. I also see a lot of Jeff Flynn and Nick Lukacs as we have played doubleheader softball every Tuesday night during the past three summers. We then wake up Wednesday mornings with numerous pains and realize how old we are getting.
