Welcome...
This site is designed to provide you with information about our Department, programs and faculty.
The Department of Immunology and Microbiology is committed to maintain high standards in research and scholarship, to develop innovative collaborative interdisciplinary programs in biomedical science, to promote and support immunological and microbiological research throughout Wayne State University, to achieve national and international recognition for excellence in research, to recruit excellent students and post-doctoral fellows including under-represented minorities, and to provide educational programs that prepare undergraduate medical, pre-doctoral and post-doctoral students for professional careers.
A major strength of the Department is our active research program as evidenced by a continued ability to attract significant extramural research funding, publication of data in major peer-reviewed journals and presentations at national and international meetings. Another strength is represented by our graduate program as demonstrated by the placement of our graduates in positions at prestigious institutions, the participation of our students and graduates at national and international scientific meetings, the selection of our graduates as moderators and plenary speakers at international research conferences and the ability of our graduates to secure positions as tenured faculty at numerous academic institutions as well as to become members on editorial boards of peer-reviewed journals and review panels for major granting agencies. An additional strength has been our ability to continually enhance the research and teaching environment by the recruitment of new, vigorous faculty as well as the acquisition of state-of-the-art equipment.
The overall focus of Department Research is Molecular Pathogenesis and includes the following areas: host-pathogen interactions; infectious agents and chronic diseases; innate immunity and inflammatory responses to infectious agents; autoimmunity and neuroimmunology; vaccine technology; cancer therapeutics; and biodefense/bioterrorism.
The Department is located on the 6th, 7th and 8th floors of Scott Hall as well as the 2nd and 3rd floors of the Lande Medical Research Building.
