Gerald Johnson passed away in December 2003. After leaving Wayne State, his got his Ph.D. and subsequently held a postdoctoral fellowship from the U.S. Public Health Service when he was in the Department of Biology at the University of California (San Diego). He then joined the Biology Department at San Diego State University in 1978 and retired as a Professor in 2002.
