Gain valuable hands-on research experience as an undergraduate student through Wayne State University School of Medicine's biomedical sciences Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE).  Designed for scholarly students with a scientific aptitude and interest in the biomedical sciences, the program provides a dynamic look into the careers available in the field. Learn firsthand how to maintain cell cultures, utilize electrophoresis, chromatography, immunoassays, animal surgery, electrophysiology, neurochemical assays, and protein and nucleic acid molecular biology.

The University and School of Medicine
WSU School of Medicine maintains state-of-the art facilities, and is located in the heart of a thriving Detroit Medical Center community, which includes seven affiliated hospitals, the Shiffman Medical Library, the Karmanos Cancer Institute and the Morris Hood Jr. Comprehensive Diabetes Center.

Program Highlights
SURE is a 10 to 12-week experience with a flexible starting date, to fit your academic schedule.  A $2,500 stipend is awarded to successful applicants (no housing allowance is provided).  Students and mentors are matched based on student¹s educational and laboratory experience, as well as shared interests.

Qualifications

  • Applicants must be rising sophomores, juniors or seniors with a minimum
    GPA of 3.0.
  • Applicants must be U.S. citizens.

Please type or NEATLY PRINT your application and personal statements.  It is extremely important that all information submitted be legible so your application can be properly processed.

Statement of Purpose:
On a separate piece of paper, please write a statement outlining your reasons for wishing to participate in the research program, research objectives and career goals.

Biographical Sketch:
Please include a short biographical sketch of yourself, which should list your interests and scientific achievements.  This can include student association memberships and high school activities, volunteer work etc.

Letters of Reference:
Two letters of reference are to be submitted directly to the address below by their authors.  If you have had previous research experience, one or both letters should come from your research adviser(s).  One letter must be from a faculty member.

Transcripts:
Please have an official transcript copy mailed directly to the address below.

Deadline for Applying:
Completed applications are due on March 14, 2008.  Early applications are strongly encouraged.
