Graduate Certificate in Public Health Practice

The Master of Public Heath (MPH) degree is administered by the School of Medicine Department of Family Medicine and Public Health Sciences in collaboration with other divisions of Wayne State University, which include the Occupational and Health Sciences Programs of the Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences.

MASTER OF PUBLIC HEALTH

The MPH Program at Wayne State University is committed to advancing the public health sciences and providing an interdisciplinary education and training that prepares and enables graduate students to address the health needs of multiple populations, particularly urban and ethnically diverse populations.

Students are required to complete the MPH core courses; Epidemiology, Biostatistics; Community Health Organization and Administration; Social Basis of Healthcare; and Environmental Health; and courses in one of two currently available areas of concentration, namely:

• Public Health Practice that includes the development of skills to manage, promote and protect the health of individuals, families, groups, and communities; and to promote policies that assure continuity of health and social justice. Courses in applied epidemiology, health program evaluation, health economics, health and aging, health education, and health management are available.
  
• Occupational and Environmental Health that involves the assessment and management of the risks to human health from exposures to chemical, physical and biological agents and from unsafe and ergonomically unsound practices found in workplace, ambient, and home environments. A wide range of courses in industrial hygiene, toxicology, safety and occupational and environmental health management are available.

All students are required to obtain practical experience working with local community and industrial health organizations; and following completion of a course on research methods, required to conduct an investigative project.

The MPH requires a minimum of 42 credit hours and can be taken in part-time or full-time status. Classes are mainly offered in the evening.

Admission to this program is contingent upon admission to the Graduate School and the Graduate Programs in the School of Medicine .  The Graduate record examination is required together with undergraduate work in mathematics (college-level math class required within the last five years), the natural sciences, and the social sciences. Applicants interested in occupational and environmental health are also required to have completed undergraduate work in chemistry and physics. Deadline for admission is February 15th   (January 1 st for international students) for fall semester admission. GRADUATE CERTIFICATE PROGRAM

The department also offers a Graduate Certificate Program in Public Health Practice, which provides specialized training for individuals of varying backgrounds and experience who are committed to working in the public health field.
