Teaching and Mentoring Medical Students
The Clinical Medicine Course
Description: This course is a collaborative effort between the departments
of Family Medicine and Public Health Sciences, General Internal Medicine and General Pediatrics.
It consists of large group sessions that are followed by two or more
small group case-based learning sessions generally each month from
September to April. There are also site visits to the offices of primary
care physicians to introduce first year students to clinical practice.
In this required course, students are introduced to basic concepts
that underlie the clinical encounter. Students will learn and practice
skills in medical interviewing, physical examination, analytic reasoning,
generating an appropriate and organized medical record, and self-assessment.
Level of Students: Year I
Instructor Qualifications: Board certification in Family Practice,
General Internal Medicine, General Pediatrics, or OB-GYN.
Instructor Time Commitment:
1) Site Visit Host-Four ½ day student office visits (approximately
4 hours each) between January and May for one or more students at
the host's discretion.
2) Small Group Instructor-A ½ day Faculty Development Session
and 14 two hour
sessions with a group of 10 to 12 students.

The Family Practice Clerkship
Description: The one-month Family Practice Clerkship consists of
ambulatory clinic experiences in community preceptors' offices. The
Clerkship is designed to allow the student to experience the types
of problems seen in Family Practice and learn the clinical method
for dealing with these conditions. In addition to the daily learning
with their preceptors in their offices, students attend small group
lectures on Wednesday afternoons, make a home visit to a patient's
residence, and spend a day with a Hospice organization, including
a visit to a Hospice patient.
Level of Students: Year III
Instructor Qualifications: Board Certification in Family Practice
from the ABFP or the AOA.
Instructor Time Commitment: Daily hosting of one student for a one
month period one or more months per year.

The Continuity Clinic Clerkship
Description: The Continuity Clinic Clerkship is a six-month required
clerkship that is sponsored by the Departments of Family Medicine and Public Health Sciences,
Internal Medicine and Pediatrics. Students spend one-half day each
week for six months in a community-based primary care preceptor's
office. In addition to experiencing the continuity of care provided
by a primary care physician, students complete clinical learning exercises
that address issues on managing the care of patients.
Level of Students: Year III
Instructor Qualifications: Board Certification in Family Practice,
Internal Medicine, or Pediatrics.
Instructor Time Commitment: Hosting one student ½ day each
week for six months.
