The Detroit Community
Why is Detroit a Good Place to Train in OEM?
OEM job opportunities in the greater Detroit area appear in a variety of private or hospital-based
OEM clinics. In addition, corporate positions as staff or contractual physicians are offered. Since
Detroit and Southeastern Michigan are noted for their high industrial density, OEM experiences for
trainees and graduates are abounding. Wayne State University's Division of Occupational and Environmental
Medicine is conveniently located in downtown Detroit, in the Detroit Medical Center (DMC). The DMC
infrastructure includes several major hospitals, and is affiliated with the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer
Institute. The DMC is one of the largest medical complexes in the United States.
Why is Detroit a Good Place to Live?
The Detroit metropolitan area offers many attractions for art lovers
(e.g., Michigan Opera Theater, Music Hall, Detroit Cultural Center,
numerous ethnic restaurants), sports fans, e.g., baseball (Detroit
Tigers), football (Detroit Lions), basketball (Detroit Pistons) and
hockey (Detroit Red Wings), and outdoor enthusiasts (e.g., the Grand
Prix auto racing on Belle Isle, the Woodward Dream Cruise and the
Detroit/Windsor Freedom Festival, the Detroit Zoo). Housing in both
the Detroit area and the surrounding suburbs is affordable. Economical
apartments and houses for rent or sale are relatively easy to find,
many with good freeway accessibility.
