Year 1 Courses
Clinical
Medicine 1
Family Medicine is one of five clinical departments that collaborate
on the Clinical Medicine course. Dr. Roe, the Family Medicine Clerkship
Director, is the Co-Director of Clinical Medicine with Dr. Michael
Stellini, from the Department of Internal Medicine.
Clinical Medicine is a longitudinal course that begins in Year
1 and continues through Years 2, 3 and 4. In Year 1, the focus
is on learning
to take a focused and organized patient history, developing interviewing
skills, and learning about professionalism. The course also includes
introductory curriculum on important themes that will be reinforced
across the curriculum. These themes include:
• Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs
• Complementary and Alternative Medicine
• Cultural Competence
•
End of Life Care
• Ethics
• Evidence-Based Medicine
• Geriatrics
• Human Sexuality
• Managing Care
• Occupational and Environmental Health and Preventive Medicine and Public
Health

In Year 1, much of the course is taught in small groups led
by primary care physicians. Many of the small group instructors
are Family Medicine
faculty or Family Practice community preceptors.

Other Curriculum
Family Medicine faculty also participate in other SOM activities during
Year 1 including Diversity Day during Orientation Week and the Student
Affairs.
Family Medicine: Year 2 Courses

Clinical Medicine II
Family Medicine is one of five clinical departments that collaborate
on the Clinical Medicine course. Dr. Roe, the Family Medicine Clerkship
Director, is the Co-Director of Clinical Medicine with Dr. Michael
Stellini, from the Department of Internal Medicine.
Clinical Medicine is a longitudinal course that begins in Year 1
and continues through years 2, 3 and 4. In Year 2, the focus is on
themes that will be reinforced across the curriculum. These themes
include:
• End of Life Care
• Ethics
• Evidence-Based Medicine
• Geriatrics; Human Sexuality
• Managing Care
• Preventive Medicine and Public Health

Many of these themes were presented in small independent courses
prior to their integration into Clinical Medicine.
In Year 2, students continue to meet in the same small groups that
they were in for Year 1 until they begin the Physical Diagnosis Course
in December. Many of the small group instructors are Family Medicine
faculty or Family Practice community preceptors.
