Medical Student Education
Family Medicine Pre-doctoral Program
Overview
The Department of Family Medicine contributes significantly to teaching
and curricular development in the undergraduate medical education program
at the Wayne State University School of Medicine. Faculty members from
our department are directors or co-directors of several required courses,
two clerkships, and numerous curricular themes integrated across the
four years of the medical school program. In addition, our faculty
teach in a number of other required courses; serve as student advisors;
sponsor Year 3 and Year 4 electives, and are active in the creation
of stations for the comprehensive OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical
Examination) given at the end of Year 3. Our staff monitor the placement
of students with over 600 community-based voluntary faculty for the
Family Medicine Clerkship, the Continuity Clinic Clerkship and the
Clinical Medicine Course. We also continually pursue curricular grants
and publish on undergraduate medical education curricular subjects.
Family Medicine faculty play a key role in initiating and maintaining
interdisciplinary collaboration and provide leadership in school-wide
curricular affairs. Our Clinical Medicine Course involves active collaboration
between the primary care departments of Family Medicine, General Internal
Medicine, and Pediatrics. Department faculty and staff also provide
advice and support to the student coordinators of the Family Medicine
Interest Group.
