Community Outreach

The Division of Occupational and Environmental Health (DOEH) is committed to collaborating with the community as well as offering its advanced occupational and environmental health services to the local, regional, national, as well as international community. Thus, we carry out a range of applied projects involving our community partners. Below, we mention a few of this ongoing community outreach projects.

We are collaborating with various community organizations to determine risk factors for the initiation of and dispersion of hookah/waterpipe smoking among adolescents and young adults. Waterpipe smoking is spreading rapidly worldwide. We are also discussing with Swedish researchers to carry-out a comparative research project in order to dwell deeper into risk factors for waterpipe use. Current data indicates that almost 50% of adolescents in Sweden has experience with waterpipe smoking as compared to some 25% in the United States.

In an international project, we will determine promoters and barriers to the successful employment of refugees. In contrast to prior studies in the area, we are simultaneously studying the importance of personal, social network, environmental and health factors in promoting or preventing employment among refugees. The study is done in collaboration with numerous refugee resettlement community-based organizations. Based on this evidence-based assessment, we will collaborate further with our community partners to identify person-specific interventions based on each individual refugee’s specific profile in each of the four areas assessed.
