The Wayne State University Master of Public Health (MPH) degree is designed for individuals with a range of academic and professional backgrounds that include the medical, veterinary, healthcare, biological, psychosocial, and behavioral sciences.

The Program is administered by the School of Medicine Department of Family Medicine and Public Health Sciences in collaboration with other divisions of Wayne State University. 

A combined MD/MPH program is now available with application through the American Medical College Application Services (AMCAS).Individuals not yet ready to commit to a full MPH degree can first register for a Graduate Certificate in Public Health Practice with the option of transferring earned course credits to the MPH degree at a later date (see below).

Accreditation:  The MPH Program at WSU is accredited by the Council for Education for Public Health (CEPH). The CEPH is an independent agency recognized by the US Department of Education to accredit public health programs. More information may be found at www.ceph.org.

Mission StatementThe MPH Program at WSU educates and engages students in public health theory, practice and research to understand and improve the health of urban and diverse populations.
                                        
Program Goals: The three major functions of the MPH Program include instruction, research and service in public health.  The following five goals pertain to these three areas.

Instructional Goals

  • Students:  Recruit and retain high caliber students with diverse educational and experiential backgrounds.
  • Curriculum:  Provide a rich scholastic environment through a competency-driven curriculum that is responsive to the changing health needs of society.
  • Graduates:  Ensure that graduates are fully prepared to contribute to public health practice and research, and to assume leadership roles.

Research Goal

  • Faculty:  Engage faculty and public health practitioners in developing and sustaining a program of public health research.

Service Goal

  • Community:  Partner with community members to improve the health and well-being of populations and to enhance the mission of the Program.

MPH Curriculum: The MPH curriculum is designed so that on completion of the MPH degree students will have gained a core of public health knowledge and competencies so as to be able to:

  • Apply evidence-based knowledge from behavioral and social sciences, biostatistics, epidemiology, environmental health, and health care organization to understanding and improving the health of the public.
  • Use appropriate research and analytical strategies to address public health issues.
  • Communicate public health principles and findings to professional and community audiences using a variety of media and methodologies.
  • Collaborate sensitively, professionally, and ethically with individuals from diverse cultural, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Recognize dynamic interactions between human and social systems and how they affect relationships among individuals, groups, organizations, communities, and other structures.
  • Evaluate the roles of health care delivery systems, public health infrastructure, financing, and health policy in solving public health concerns.
  • Understand the ethical choices, values, and professional practices implicit in public health decisions, giving consideration to the effect of choices on community stewardship, equity, social justice, and accountability.

MPH Course Requirements: A minimum of 42 credit hours are required for graduation

All students are required to complete the MPH core courses:

  • Seminar in Public Health
  • Epidemiology and Applied Epidemiology
  • Biostatistics
  • Social Basis of Health Care
  •  Health Care Organization and Administration
  • Principles of Environmental Health
  • Health Program Evaluation
  • Research Methods for Health Professionals

A range of elective courses are available to provide students with interests and career goals in several areas of public health practice. These areas include the management, promotion and protection of the health of individuals, families, groups, and communities, as well as the promotion of policies that assure continuity of health and social justice.  Elective courses in health economics, health policy and planning, health and aging, health education, and health management are available.  Courses are also available for students interested in several aspects of occupational and environmental health. Courses include such topics as the management and promotion of effective and innovative strategies to assess and minimize the adverse health effects resulting from chemical, biological, physical, and psychosocial exposures and the application of unique intervention strategies to ensure the wellbeing and sustained performance of individuals, families, organizations, and communities. Elective courses in toxicology, industrial hygiene and safety, employee and organizational health, and health psychology are also available.   

All students are required to obtain practical experience working with local community and/or industrial health organizations; and following completion of a course on research methods, conduct an investigative project. 

The MPH degree requires a minimum of 42 credit hours and can be taken in part-time or full-time status.  Classes are mainly offered in the evening and must be completed within a six year period. 

A Graduate Certificate in Public Health Practice (GC-PHP)is available that requires completion of a minimum of 15-16 credits hours for individuals who either have completed a graduate degree or are not yet ready to commit themselves to the demands of an MPH Program.
