WSU/SOM Faculty Career Development Programs
New Faculty Orientation (offered annually, Fall and Spring)
"Welcome to Wayne" is an orientation program for new faculty and those faculty who are interested in learning how they can revitalize their career. The half-day program provides overviews of the School of Medicine, career management and development resources, education at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and research. A resources information fair is included.

This workshop provides an overview of the journal peer review process, an understanding of what editors look for in a good peer review, and practice in analyzing and critiquing examples of peer reviews.

Shiffman Medical Library Education and Training
The Shiffman Medical Library offers a variety of educational programs for Wayne State University health sciences faculty, students and staff. The library also offers workshops and customized training programs for members of the community. The Shiffman Library librarians are also pleased to assist individuals in learning about health sciences information resources that can be useful in research, papers, presentations, instruction and clinical care. Assistance is available at our Reference Desk and appointments are encouraged for one-to-one consultation.
These topics include, but are not limited to:
- MEDLINE via OVID or PubMed
- The variety of biomedical databases
- File management (e.g., EndNote)
- Finding journals
- Custom programs for research or administrative assistants
- Finding funding information
- Effectively searching the Internet for health sciences information
- Custom programs about critical health matters including HIV/AIDS

Making the Right Moves: A Practical Guide to Scientific Management for Postdocs and New Faculty
This 248-page guide is a PDF document that may be downloaded for free in its entirety or, more manageably, by chapter. Making the Right Moves provides practical advice from experienced bio-medical investigators and other professionals. Topics cover the gamut of academic skills for faculty and fellows, from negotiating a faculty position and staffing a laboratory, to project management, understanding technology transfer, setting up collaborations, and getting funded.
The book is based on presentations and discussions from a course developed by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and the Burroughs Wellcome Fund.
