LETTER FROM PROGRAM DIRECTOR
Emergency Medicine Residency Encouraging Residents to Meet their Career Goals
The Emergency Medicine (EM) residency at Wayne State University/Sinai-Grace Hospital is a PGY I-III program that places residents on the front line of learning by providing many routine and life saving care opportunities in a wide spectrum of emergency situations. We see all ages in this busy, modern setting, with more than twenty percent of our patients being in the pediatric age group.
Sinai-Grace Hospital, a member of the Detroit Medical Center, is a major teaching hospital for the Wayne State University school of Medicine. Sinai-Grace’s three year EM Residency Program was established in 1981, and remains fully accredited by the ACGME to train ten residents per year. The program is open to physicians who have graduated from an accredited school of Medicine or Osteopathy. This program exposes students to every aspect of care required by ill or injured patients, and provides the academic experiences needed to develop the skills and confidence to practice EM in any environment. We have five hours of protected didactic time each Thursday morning, utilize a simulator facility for training, hold a monthly Journal Club, and provided the opportunity to teach the ACLS/BLS courses offered through our department. Upon completion of the program, residents may apply to the American Board of Emergency Medicine to sit for the board certification examination.
The only trauma center in northwest Detroit, Sinai-Grace’s Emergency Department (ED) treats approximately 80,000 patients annually. Sinai Grace Hospital is a verified Level II trauma center by the American College of Surgeons and a primary destination for Detroit and Wayne County trauma patients. Approximately 22 percent of these visits result in admission to the hospital. The department sees patients of all ages with a wide variety of medical emergencies, as well as penetrating and blunt traumatic injuries. Residents in Sinai-Grace’s EM program care for patients under the direct supervision of outstanding EM residency trained and board certified faculty to provide an optimal educational experience. Our strength is clearly our people.
The Emergency Department occupies over 33,000 square feet of space. It consists of 36 acute care beds, 2 recently renovated resuscitation/ trauma bays, a 13-bed clinical decision/observation area, and a new 9 room Express Care area. Ancillary departments in the 551 bed Sinai-Grace Hospital are specially equipped to support the ED service. Also located in the ED is a 4-bed Digital Radiology Suite including 2 CT scanners including a new ultra-fast multi slice scanner. There is extensive use of technology, including electronic patient tracking; digital radiography and wireless networking in the ED. EM Residents will compliment their experience at Sinai-Grace by rotating through Children’s Hospital of Michigan and Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital.
’The Sinai-Grace Hospital Emergency Medicine Residency Program has demonstrated great success in preparing physicians for a career in EM. Sinai-Grace’s EM training opens opportunities to practice across the United States and we have graduates located in all areas of the country, and some outside this country. Graduates of the Sinai-Grace program are among the leaders of our specialty and are practicing as Emergency Department directors, as Residency Program directors in academic settings, and in clinical Emergency Medicine. We are proud of our graduates and welcome your interest in our program.
