LETTER FROM PROGRAM DIRECTOR

Thank you for your interest in the Wayne State University Sinai-Grace Hospital Emergency Medicine Residency Program.  Hopefully information provided on this website will serve as a guide to uncover what a unique and invaluable training opportunity we have available for you.  Certainly we welcome any additional questions you may have.

Our residency program at Sinai-Grace Hospital was established in 1981 as a PGY 1-3 program. Growing from two residents annually in 1981, we are now fully accredited to train 12 Emergency Medicine Residents per year.  Our most recent Residency Review Committee site review occurred in 2006 during which we received full accreditation for 5 years.  This is the ideal for any residency program as serves as recognition for a well-established, high-quality residency program.  Our program is open to physicians who have graduated from an accredited school of Medicine or Osteopathy.

As a member of the Detroit Medical Center and the only trauma center in northwest Detroit, the Emergency Department at Sinai-Grace Hospital cares for approximately 89,000 patients annually.  We have a well-established and friendly working relationship with the Department of Surgery that enables our residents to manage the high volume of trauma patients on a daily basis.  Integrated into our Emergency Department, pediatric patients account for 25% of our patient volume.  This opportunity is unmatched and allows our residents to comfortably care for any pediatric patient regardless of severity of illness.  Similarly, one-quarter of our patients require admission to the hospital which demonstrates that our residents care for the sickest of the sick.  This type of experience cannot be overemphasized as it enables our graduating residents to successfully transition into any Emergency Department feeling comfortable in managing critical patients.

As Associate Residency Director for seven years and now Program Director, I am confident that the Emergency Medicine Residency Program at Sinai-Grace Hospital  encourages our residents to reach their full potential.  Our graduates easily obtain employment in cities that are in high-demand throughout the country.  Many of our graduates have pursued fellowship training with tremendous success in Toxicology, Ultrasound and Basic Science.  Emergency Medicine Advocacy is a field about which I am passionate as we have an obligation to our patients and our future colleagues to improve our specialty.  As President-Elect of the Michigan College of Emergency Physicians, I encourage our residents to become involved in organizational medicine at a local, state or national level.

Sinai-Grace Hospital Emergency Medicine Residency Program is continually striving to improve resident education and successful accomplishment of the six ACGME core competencies.  In addition, I speak for all of us when I say that we are truly a family and that our success is due to a vested interest in having our residents become the best Emergency Medicine Physicians possible.  No doubt residency is difficult; yet at Sinai-Grace, you will make friendships that will last you a life-time and carry with you the skill-set to become leaders in the specialty of Emergency Medicine.
