Conference
The department of Emergency Medicine provides a carefully planned conference schedule which covers the topics outlined in the Model of Clinical Practice of Emergency Medicine outlined by the American College of Emergency Physicians. The conference lecture schedule cycles through the model curriculum over a two-year period and is accredited by ACEP for CME credit. Lectures are given primarily by emergency medicine faculty, faculty members from other departments within the Detroit Medical Center and visiting local or nationally known speakers. In addition to covering topics outlined in the Model of Clinical Practice of EM, dedicated conference time is allocated to develop skills needed to interpret ECGs and radiographic studies. Also, intriguing and clinically challenging situations are presented and discussed at Oral board practice sessions, Follow-Up rounds and Peer Review (M&M) case conferences. First year residents give one evidence based medicine talk at conference. Second year residents present 3 or 4 follow-up round cases and third year residents give one grand rounds lecture on a pertinent topic. Conference is held Thursday mornings from 7am-12pm and protected time from clinical duties is provided.
In addition to our weekly conference, the department participates in the hospital's weekly multidisciplinary trauma conference which reviews the care of patients with traumatic illnesses. During the first month of residency, resident are trained in pediatric advanced life support (PALS), advanced cardiac life support (ACLS), advanced trauma life support (ATLS) and neonatal advanced life support (NALS).
