The Illness of Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh was not a mad artist, but rather an exceptional man who suffered from an inherited disease.   He was wonderfully creative because of intelligence, talent and hard work. He was a genius in spite of his illness -- not because of it.1

The careers of famous people, the effects of life-on-work and work-on-life, are always fascinating subjects, but never more exciting than the case of Vincent van Gogh. He is on everybody's list of outstanding artists and in every catalog of creative people. But his life was jagged, and Vincent is as well known for his struggles against adversity as for his masterpieces in drawing and painting. Unfortunately, there has been much idle speculation, and thus a compounding of myths surrounding the man. This program explores all of the medical and life-style information, much of it taken directly from the artist's own letters,2 and offers a set of structured analyses to assist you in arriving at an understanding of van Gogh's illness.
