INTRODUCTION

__This program is designed for teaching the anatomy of the limbic lobe and associated structures in the basal forebrain and the anterior medial frontal lobe. These structures are involved in learning, memory, emotional responses, and a wide range of behaviors. The increasing resolution of MRI and CT scanners allows visualization of more components within this system. Since several common clinical disorders such as schizophrenia and other affective disorders, addiction, and phobias are mediated by this system, radiological imaging along with related techniques such functional MRI and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) will play an increasing role in research, evaluation, and treatment of these disorders.

A brief review of the anatomy of the limbic system is presented on the next page. The main portion of this program follows which consists of sagittal, coronal, and axial MRI images and axial CT images in which relevant structures are identified. At the end of program, there is an index of neuroanatomical terms and a self-test covering material presented in this program.
