Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can I take the NRP renewal course if I do not have a CURRENT NRP card from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) ? I passed the examination 3 years ago.

Answer: No. The renewal is only for individuals whose NRP card, at the time of renewal, have not expired. If your card have expired prior to the renewal course, you will need to take the New Provider’s course. AAP does not give any GRACE period.

I took a similar program (not the AAP-sponsored program) and my card from that course is current. Can I take this renewal course ?

Answer: No. The AAP only recognizes it’s own course.

I need to renew my card but would like to take a vacation day (attend a conference, etc) on one of the 2 (or 3) dates the course is offered. Can I attend only one session ?

Answer: The written portion of the test must be passed before the Megacode can be scheduled. You have up to 30 days to take the Megacode after successfully taking the written examination. We will let you know (by email) what alternative arrangements can be made.

I meet all the renewal requirements but have lost my book. Can I get a new copy ?

Answer: A current version of the textbook should be available in the CHM library. If not, email us to let us know. If you wish to purchase a new book, the charge is $50.00. Please send your personal check made out to Children’s Hospital of Michigan, 3901 Beaubien Blvd., Detroit, MI 48201, c/o NRP – The Children’s Research Center of Michigan at CHM. Your return address (with zip code) should be included. Please allow a minimum of 2 weeks for processing and delivery.

I signed up for the course and received an assigned time for the Skill Stations or Megacode, but have forgotten where and when it will be held.

Answer: Plan to meet the instructor prior to the first session to confirm your assigned time.

I don't like the time I was assigned for the Skill Stations or Megacode and want to trade with another resident. Can we just go ahead and change times?

Answer: You are welcome to change times with someone who has also signed up however, you must BOTH let us know, since we will attempt to page anyone who does not show up for the course. BOTH residents need to let us know so that changes are agreed upon and remembered.

I forgot to attend the written session. What do I do?

Answer: Arrange for a time prior to starting the Skill Stations or Megacode and be prepared to pass the examination. The instructors will assign you to a time slot that day. If that is not possible, you will need to take the new provider’s course in June.

I did not pass all of the exams on the written portion. Can I still take the Megacode ?

Answer: No, you must pass all of the written AND correct all wrong answers (using the book) before you can take the Megacode.
I've worked in the nursery and know that we don't do things the same way the book teaches.

Can I answer the questions like I've been practicing?

Answer: No, the AAP makes up the test and the rules. To receive your NRP card from the AAP, you must answer the way the text dictates.

I still have not gotten my NRP card and the course was completed two weeks ago

Answer: The AAP send out the cards and we send them in the roster after everyone has completed the materials. If It has been more than 8 weeks, check with us (by email) to see if you gave us a correct address.

If you have additional questions, please e-mail us and we will respond as quickly as we can within a week.

Good Luck!
