The NICHD awarded a major contract and lease to Wayne State
University to house and to support the operations of the Perinatology
Research Branch (PRB). While housed at WSU, the PRB is an intramural
NIH program. The new facility combines a patient population with a high
rate of pregnancy complications and the academic resources of the WSU
faculty and staff. The branch collaborates with WSU which is part of
the Life Science Corridor established by the state of Michigan to attract
and support research and development in the biomedical field.
•
The PRB conducts studies into maternal and infant health
and disease, particularly on conditions responsible for perinatal morbidity
and mortality.
•
The Branch focuses on the study of human parturition (premature
labor), intrauterine growth retardation, congenital anomalies, and pre-eclampsia.
With a strong interest in applied science, the Branch aims to develop
diagnostic and therapeutic strategies to solve clinical problems.
