What is a Standardized Patient?

A Standardized Patient, or SP is a layperson, or a person with a stable, chronic illness trained to present a clinical scenario in the same manner as a “real” patient, for teaching or testing.  For more information please see the Prospective Standardized Patients or Information for Students.

    Advantages of Standardized Patients

    • The Standardized Patient is not actually “sick” or worried about their care.  Teaching efforts can be concentrated more on student learning rather than “sick” patient’s condition.
    • Standardized Patients provides a “safe” environment for students to learn and perfect skills they will use with actual patients.
    • The Standardized Patient’s presentation in the clinical setting is practiced and “standardized” to be predictable over repeated presentations.
    • Multiple Standardized Patients can be trained for the same role, allowing large numbers of students to have comparable experiences over a shorter period.
    • The Standardized Patient is trained to provide specific, constructive, feedback from the patient’s perspective.
