2008 Detroit Pre-Medical
Scholars Program

A partnership effort supported by the Wayne State University School of Medicine (WSU), Detroit Public Schools (DPS), Henry Ford Health System (HFHS), Sinai-Grace Hospital and Trinity Health System and designed to motivate students to pursue a career as a physician and to increase the number of students entering health care professions.

Program Purpose :
To increase and enhance student interest, awareness, desire and motivation relative to pursuing a career as a physician, to sensitize students to professional behavior standards, and to provide exposure to role models for successful career professionals.

Program Selection :
11 th grade students from the Detroit Public Schools who are considering a career as a physician will be selected by a committee consisting of representatives from participating institutions. The criteria for selection will be need, quality of application material documenting a strong interest in becoming a physician, interview score, GPA (must have a 3.0 GPA to apply), and counselor and teacher recommendations. This program is targeted especially for those students aspiring to become physicians.

Implementation :
Orientation will be held on Monday, June 24 and the students will begin at the clinical sites on Tuesday, June 25, 2008.

Work Schedule :
Students will work five days per week: regular working hours; exact schedule will depend on the clinical rotation site.

Stipend:
Student participants will receive a work stipend of approximately $2,000 for the eight week program. Due to IRS regulations, income taxes etc. may be deducted from the student’s checks.

Program Design :
Students will receive assignments to one of the participating hospitals. Every effort will be made to place students in hospitals closest to their homes but some students will be required to travel further than others.
Students will attend weekly seminars on Wednesdays. The seminars will be from 12:30 PM - 4:30 PM . They will be held at the Wayne State University School of Medicine.
The purpose of the seminars is to increase awareness of the diverse health care options and educational requirements. Guest presenters are educators and noted health care professionals.

Requirements and Special Projects:
Students will be required to prepare a ten minute PowerPoint presentation on a topic of choice, related to their experiences during the summer or a specific medical concern. A bibliography, charts, graphs and tables of data will be included in the presentation. Students will receive guidance and assistance with their presentation from the program coordinators. Each participant will receive a packet of information that outlines the requirements for their presentation. Parents and teachers will be invited to the special session on Wednesday, August 13, 2008 when all students will give their presentations.
Students will be required to participate in an exit interview and to complete a structured questionnaire that will serve as an evaluation of the program. Certificates will be awarded to each student completing the program.

Each participant is expected to enter the 2009 Science and Engineering Fair of Metropolitan Detroit and the Wayne State University Junior Humanities and Science Symposium. The material gathered from the Detroit Pre-Medical Scholars Program may serve as the background to prepare for these two competitive events.
