Wanda (no longer with the clinic) and Russell greet patients as they sign in. They also manage the patients' medical records that are stored on large index cards.
Finding out why the patient came to the clinic and eliciting the history of present illness if applicable.
Every patient has their blood pressure, heart rate, heart sounds, and lung sounds checked.
Checking the ear canal and ear drum could be part of a physical or an investigation into a problem the patient is having.
After the patient interview and physical exam, the interviewer, mostly medical students, but in this case a PA student, present their findings to the doc. Be ready for a question or two about how you should treat the patient!
A large repertoire of drugs have been donated. The doc will provide the necessary prescription drugs when indicated.
Next the student picks up any requested OTC medications.
In addition to helping our patients with their medical needs, we also like to provide them with a sanitary kit. Items used to make the kits are donated.
The patient is consulted on any meds that have been provided and told when to return to the clinic for follow up.
At least part of the year it is nice in Detroit so a couple students chat outside the clinic after a few hours of volunteering.
