| Wayne State University, one of three research universities in Michigan, spends more than $226 million annually on research. The Carnegie Foundation classifies Wayne State as RU/VH (Research Universities, Very High research activity), placing the institution among the nation’s most prestigious 3.6 percent of universities with this distinction. The university recently established the National Biofuel Energy Lab; TechTown Research and Technology Park; the Perinatology Research Branch of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development; and the Smart Sensors and Integrated Microsystems lab. Survey results of scientists in the United States, Canada, and Western Europe in The Scientist place WSU among the 15 best research institutions at which to work in academia.
Wayne State’s 1,676 faculty members make a major contribution to research in engineering; science and medicine; arts and humanities; and social sciences. From 1997 to 2006, faculty members were authors and co-authors of 21,000 journal articles. A significant fraction of both faculty and research support — internal as well as external — is committed to cancer.
Wayne State’s 203-acre campus and six satellite campuses throughout Southeast Michigan draw more than 32,000 students, placing Wayne State among the nation’s 30-largest public universities. Students from 44 states and more than 100 countries attend Wayne State; more than one-third are minorities, making the student body the most diverse university student body in Michigan.
The university offers more than 350 undergraduate, postbachelor’s, master’s, doctoral, professional, specialist and certificate programs in 11 schools and colleges: Business Administration; Education; Engineering; Law; Medicine; Nursing; Pharmacy and Health Sciences; Graduate; Fine, Performing and Communication Arts; Liberal Arts and Sciences; and Social Work.
Recognized for the beauty of its unique architecture, the main campus is in Detroit’s University Cultural Center, a neighborhood including museums, libraries and other cultural institutions.
Just south of the University Cultural Center is the campus of Wayne State’s School of Medicine. With more than 1,000 students, it is the largest single-campus medical school in the United States. On the medical campus, the school is surrounded by Detroit Medical Center hospitals, known for their world-class programs in oncology, organ transplant, cardiology, women’s services, neurosciences, stroke treatment, optometry, orthopaedics, pediatrics and rehabilitation.
Although the university and its adjoining medical and cultural complexes are important factors in deciding to pursue graduate studies in Detroit, it is the internal components of faculty, students, laboratories and support that have the major impact on the quality of the graduate experience.
Campus Recreation and Entertainment
Wayne State’s athletics campus, west of the main campus, includes courts and fields for basketball, football, jogging, racquetball, soccer, squash, tennis and volleyball, a weight training/exercise room and swimming facilities.
This campus is the home of Wayne State’s 17 men’s and women’s athletics teams: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s fencing, football, golf, men’s and women’s ice hockey, softball, men’s and women’s swimming, men’s and women’s tennis, and volleyball. The university competes in NCAA Division I and Division II. Men’s and women’s hockey and fencing are in Division I. The other teams compete in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
In the heart of the main campus, the Mort Harris Recreation and Fitness Center features fitness, recreation and wellness programs, free weights, new cardio and strength-building machines, a 30-foot high climbing wall, two basketball/volleyball courts and a three-lane running/walking track.
The undergraduate university theatre is the historic Bonstelle Theatre. The university has restored this building and annually produces a series of plays and musical productions there. The Hilberry Theatre is another exceptional theatre space with a ramp that extends the stage and encircles the audience. The building is the home of the nation’s only graduate theatre company, staffed by young, up-and-coming professionals. The Hilberry runs on a rotating repertory schedule. Its company performs an annual season of seven plays. The intimate workshop theatre, the Studio, is the space for experimental and student lab productions.
