Board of Student Organizations

Serving the WSUSOM Student Organizations

First you need a faculty advisor and to establish the roles of the leaders of the group (e.g. co-coordinator).

Next you need a written proposal identifying the purpose of the organization, give a description of the organization, why your organization would benefit the school of medicine, what kind of funding it would need this year and from where it would get it (this is something we can talk about and try to guide you guys if you in fact do need money).

This proposal must be submitted to and approved by the Dean of Student Affairs.  You want to make sure you are really prepared.  If you show that you are motivated, well-prepared, and provide something that school is lacking that is going to give you your best chance.

Once you have been approved by administration you need to get you approved by the Student Senate/BSO.  You can email the BSO a copy of your written proposal and then we can schedule a time for you guys to make a presentation during a Senate meeting. If already approved by administration this is rather more a formality.

Below I have cut and pasted the official procedure for starting a new organization from the Student Senate Constitution.

Article XI: Duties and Responsibilities of Student Organizations

Purpose:  The purpose of this article is to ensure a minimum level of responsibility that student organizations have to maintain to be eligible for the support of the student senate (including financial support for organization events).

Section 1:  Recognition by the Senate

To be officially recognized by the Senate, an organization must:

A.      Submit a written proposal identifying the purpose of their organization to the Senate President, the Office of Student Organizations, and the Dean of Student Affairs.

B.       Present to the Senate a Constitution detailing the purpose, goals, membership, activities and prospective funding needs of the organization at a regularly scheduled Senate meeting.

C.       Receive a 2/3 approval by secret ballot from the Senate following the presentation and discussion.

To form a new organization you must be recognized by the BSO and the Student Senate.  Please inform a BSO Board Member of your prospective interest and subsequently follow the criteria below.
