Parks - Ten large parks located throughout a
five-county region of southeastern Michigan circling the Detroit area make up the
vast Metro Park system. Here one finds nature study centers, beaches with
supervised swimming, boating and sailing centers, picnic and barbecue facilities,
camping areas and winter sport activities. For just a couple of bucks, the Metro
Parks offer a clean and safe environment to unwind and enjoy the natural beauty
of the state. Also, the Detroit Zoological Park in Royal Oak, ~10 miles north of
Detroit, is a most popular attraction. The Detroit Zoo is and it is noted for
being among the first to exhibit its animals in natural settings with moats
instead of behind bars and fences.
Skiing - Some of the best skiing in the entire
Midwest is found in the state of Michigan. Downhill ski slopes of varying
difficulty are located within 200 miles of Detroit. Extensive trails for
cross-country skiing are found within a half-hours drive from downtown at
suburban golf courses and also throughout the Metro Park system.
Professional Sports -
Spectator sports in the Detroit area include Lions Football, Pistons Basketball,
Red Wings Hockey, Tigers Baseball, Rockers Soccer, and horse-racing. Ford Field,
home of the Detroit Lions and Comerica Park where the Detroit Tigers play, are
both located in the heart of Detroits entertainment district just a couple
of miles south of Wayne State University campuses. Canada, our neighbor -
Windsor, Ontario, Canada, is located south of Detroit and can be reached in five
minutes using either the Ambassador Bridge or the Detroit-Windsor tunnel.
Particular points of interest in Windsor include shopping, dining, and a
magnificent view of the Detroit skyline. Once there, additional Canadian
attractions are easily reached including historic Amherstberg, the world-famous
Jack Miner Bird Sanctuary, the Stratford Skakespearean Festival, and Point Pelee
National Park, a bird-watchers paradise year-round.
