Chairman's Message

Surgery at the Detroit Medical CenterOn behalf of the Wayne State University Physician Group Department of Anesthesiology, I am pleased that you have an interest in our academic department, education, research, and clinical practice.

The Department of Anesthesiology is distinguished by its commitment to provide quality education in accordance with good clinical practice, appropriate standards of clinical care, and comprehensive anesthesia patient care techniques for those seeking professional education and training in the academic arena of Anesthesia.   Department professors, physicians, and staff pride themselves on the success of the students, residents and fellows; and other successful accomplishments such as department staff research publication, professional presentations, and academic programs and events offering continuing medical education credits; such as the annual hands-on Advanced Regional Anesthesia programming.

Anesthesia education encompasses undergraduate education in the School of Medicine, Wayne State University, comprehensive residency, and ACGME (Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education) fellowships are available.  For more information regarding anesthesia education, please visit the Residency Program and Fellowships links on this website.  The Department of Anesthesiology views education and training seriously and actively seeks those individuals interested in learning, leading, and prescribing good clinical anesthesia to apply and further their academic medical careers.

Our physicians, faculty, residents, fellows, and other department staff, are actively engaged in a wide range of medical research, including corporate sponsored and non-corporate sponsored clinical research trials.  Clinical and basic medical research is an important component in the clinical and educational setting and is collaboratively integrated with clinical practice in all seven Detroit Medical Center hospitals, and numerous out-patient clinics.  Current clinical practice is comprehensive, and is practiced as a physician-directed anesthesia care team/group.  Professional consultation is also available upon request.

If you should have any questions and/or comments regarding the Department of Anesthesiology, I invite you to contact us at jnichols@med.wayne.edu.
Thank you in advance and best wishes in your future endeavors.
