Fellowship in the Department of Anesthesiology
General Information
Thank you for your interest in a Fellowship in the Department of Anesthesiology. The Department currently offers four fellowship opportunities:
Pediatric Anesthesia (Accredited)
Pain Management (Accredited)
Critical Care Medicine
Obstetric Anesthesia
All fellowships are available in the PGY-5 (CA-4) year. Qualified applicants will have completed four years of training in an ACGME accredited anesthesiology or physical medicine and rehabilitation (for pain fellowship only) residency program, currently in the examination process with the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA), and be eligible to obtain a State of Michigan medical license.
Application Process
Applications are accepted from April to July each year. All applicants must be board eligible. Please contact each program's personnel for more information on what type of Visa sponsorship each program will accept. Interviews are scheduled between August and October.
All fellowship applicants are required to submit:
- A current resume/CV
- A completed fellowship application for the fellowship program of interest
- Three letters of recommendation from those who are familiar with the applicant’s prior medical performance, work habits, decision making, etc.
- Any other supporting documentation that the applicant feels would be beneficial to his/her application (copies of standardized test scores (ITE exams, AKT exams, USMLE scores, etc.)
- A recent picture/photo
- Availability for a formal interview

Interview Process
Applicants who send in a completed application and all of the required documentation may be invited for a formal interview. All fellowship applications are reviewed and candidates are interviewed by the Director and/or program faculty and staff of each fellowship program. All applicants will be notified of the final decision in writing. Successful applicants who receive an offer for a position will be notified in writing and a contract from GME (Graduate Medical Education) will follow.

Pediatric Anesthesiology
The pediatric anesthesiology fellowship in collaboration with the Department of Anesthesia at Children’s Hospital of Michigan, offers an ACGME-accredited one-year program, and occurs at Children's Hospital of Michigan (www.chmkids.org), Michigan’s only free-standing hospital dedicated to caring for children. The pediatric anesthesiology fellowship involves advanced clinical training in all aspects of anesthesia and perioperative pediatric medicine. This program allows exposure to anesthesiology for complex congenital disease, neurosurgery, neonatal surgery, craniofacial and scoliosis repair.

Pain Management
The pain management fellowship is a one-year program that involves training in acute and chronic pain management. Rotations through component specialties ensure adequate exposure to all aspects of modern pain management techniques, including diagnosis and treatment modalities.
A multidisciplinary approach is taken in the management of pain during this fellowship. Fellows will be provided education, training, and experience required for a specialist in pain management. Including (but not limited to) training in theory, indications, risks, complications, and practical applications of a variety of pain management procedures and techniques. Fellows receive and will participate in ongoing didactic education as scheduled. Fellows will perform invasive procedure under the direction of qualified faculty. These procedures include (but are not limited to) epidural injection, spinal cord stimulation, peripheral nerve blocks, celiac plexus block, etc.
Upon completion, fellows will meet all requirements for passage of the ABA Certificate of Special Competence in Pain Management.
The pain fellowship offers a competitive compensation and benefits package, including approved vacation.

Critical Care Medicine
This one-year program involves training in collaboration with the Department of Pulmonary Medicine and Surgery through a conjoint program which exposes the successful candidate to specialists in Critical Care Medicine from three disciplines: Anesthesiology, internal medicine, and surgery. Fellows also have direct responsibility for all aspects of the provision of critical care and organ failure supportive regimens.
This program is currently in the application process to ACGME for accreditation. More information will be available at a later date.
Obstetric Anesthesia
The obstetric anesthesia fellowship is a one-year program that provides significant opportunities for clinical, teaching, research, and administrative experience in obstetric anesthesia. Rotations include one month in the neonatal intensive care unit and one month with the division of maternal/fetal medicine. Fellows will assist faculty in the daily supervision of obstetric residents and support obstetric anesthesia lectures and journals clubs.
This is not an ACGME approved pathway for Anesthesiology and will not lead to a Certificate of Special Competence.
