Facilities

Laboratory:  
  Dr. McAllister has approximately 2000 ft2 of laboratory space which is available for this project. Included are a 400 ft2 histology lab, a 400 ft2 cell/molecular lab, a 500 ft2 small animal surgical suite, and two 200 ft2 small animal behavioral testing labs. All labs are adjacent or near each other in the basement of the Lande Medical Research Building.
Clinical:  
  Through collaborations with pediatric neurosurgeons and adult neurosurgeons, Dr. McAllister has access to clinical and surgical areas in the Children's Hospital of Michigan, and Harper and Detroit Receiving Hospitals, respectively.
Animal:  
  Three AAALAC-accredited facilities are available for small and large animal housing in the Lande Bldg, Scott Hall, and the Elliman Building. The Elliman Building also contains state-of-the-art surgical facilities under the direction of a full-time veterinarian and two licensed surgical technologists. Dr. McAllister maintains a breeding colony of hydrocephalic rats in the Elliman Building.
Computer:  
  Dr. McAllister's office and research facilities include 4 Dell Pentium II PCs and 2 printers, which are connected to the Wayne State University and the Department of Neurological Surgery networks. The department independently maintains its own network, which includes slide and poster making equipment, as well as a dye sublimation color printer, under the direction of a full-time computer support person.
Office:  
  Dr. McAllister has ca. 400 ft2 of office space near his lab and in the Academic Office of the Department of Neurological Surgery. His colleagues and resident researchers have offices or study areas in or near the lab totalling about 400 ft2. A half-time secretary paid by the department works exclusively for Dr. McAllister.
Other:  
 

Dr. McAllister has access to two machine shops, one maintained by the Department of Neurological Surgery and the other by the Department of Ophthalmology. Through his joint appointment in the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology, Dr. McAllister has access to graphics imaging and quantitative light and electron microscopy resources. Likewise, he has access to the morgue and cadaver preparation services through the same department.
