Mr. Anfeng Wang’s research interests include biocompatible
materials, surface modification, material synthesis, and surface/interfacial
phenomena. For all the implantable biomedical devices, biocompatibility
and biostability are two important aspects to be considered seriously.
Poor biocompatibility and/or biostability often result in the impaired
functionalities and shortened life-time of the devices. By applying stable
and biocompatible coatings with the thickness in nanometer scale, the
life-time of the implantable biomedical devices could be extended. For
the shunt materials in the treatment of hydrocephalus, the surfaces of
them could be modified to achieve desired hydrophobicity, charge density,
chemical functionality, and so on. The outermost surface (or encapsulation)
is in direct contact with human tissues, therefore it plays a very important
role in determining the biocompatibility and biostability of the implantable
devices.
