DIAGNOSIS?
Large ventricular septal defect.
OUTCOME
The infant presented in this case study was treated with medical therapy and improved. Weight gain improved. The defect never closed but it became smaller, pulmonary resistance was normal and the amount of shunted blood became non-significant. The infant grew into a normal child and a normal young adult. She still has to take antibiotics for endocarditis prevention before dental work. Her life expectancy is normal.
