Humanistic Medicine (HuMED)

(download this page in pdf format)

This program is designed to allow students to explore medicine and the human condition. Through activities outside the traditional curriculum, students will have the opportunity to develop an understanding of emotional, spiritual and physical health. Activities will touch on culture, complementary and alternative medicine ( CAM ), morality & ethics, and psychosocial issues in illness. Also included are opportunities for participants to shadow CAM practitioners, learn about medicine in the humanities, and meet with a community of like-minded medical students.

Yearly Requirements

1. Educational- 38 hours

"Art and Medicine” Course
6 X 3.5 hour classes (at least 3 Fall, 3 Spring)
Dr. Robert Zalenski, MD, WSUSOM Professor Emergency Medicine

Dr. Richard Raspa, PhD, WSU Professor & Graduate Chair Interdisciplinary Studies

When we care for a patient, we do much more than perform a differential diagnosis, order tests and prescribe the right therapy. The call of medicine is to relieve a patient's suffering. “Art and Medicine” is a new course that will take you through the richness of human experience as revealed by serious illness. The opportunities for intimacy and healing are explored through great art- literature, painting, poetry, theater, and personal narrative.
