Providence Hospital

As a community-based, teaching system involved in research, Providence Hospital reaches a diverse population with equally diverse needs. With more than 20 ambulatory sites throughout metropolitan Detroit, including the 459-bed main hospital in Southfield, and Providence Medical Center-Providence Park in Novi, our network delivers care in urban and suburban markets. Here, more than 900 physicians in over 50 specialties treat thousands of patients every year.

Medical Education sponsors residency and fellowship programs with 164 residents and fellows including family practice, internal medicine, general surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, and fellowships in cardiology, gastroenterology, diagnostic radiology, hematology/oncology and sports medicine. Academic standards are high, and this is reflected in the success of our graduates in passing their certification board examinations. We place the same emphasis on student education and are confident that students rotating through Providence are well prepared for their future residency and career.

The rotations listed below are for 4th year students except where indicated by both 3rd and 4th year notations. Rotations should be scheduled through the school.

Cardiology General Surgery 3 & 4 Ob/Gyn 3 & 4
Critical Care Infectious Diseases Pathology
Diagnostic Radiology Internal Medicine 3 & 4` Plastic Surgery
Emergency Medicine Medical Oncology Psychiatry 3 & 4

Core rotations consist of structured rotations with level appropriate patient loads, scheduled lectures, conferences, and teaching rounds. Students are equipped to achieve curriculum competencies by the end of the rotation. Fourth year electives match the student with academic preceptors who are clinically active. Students learn through hands-on patient care, patient based teaching and didactics, and departmental lectures.

Students that rotate at Providence will have free parking and meals provided at various educational conferences. There is a combined resident/student lounge for relaxation and full access to the library services. On call, students are provided with meals and assigned a call room.
