Clinical Science Overview
The Clinical
Curriculum of the Wayne State University School of Medicine includes
14 months of required courses, 11 completed during the third year
of medical school and 3 during the fourth year of medical school. Additionally, a minimum of six
months of elective courses must be taken during the clinical years
before graduation.
The third year is comprised of the following 12 months of course work, taken
in two blocks as described below:

These courses
are arranged as a 6-month PRIMARY CARE BLOCK (Internal Medicine, Family
Medicine and Pediatrics) and a 6-month SPECIALTY BLOCK (Surgery, Obstetrics
and Gynecology, Neurology and Psychiatry). Although the courses within
each block may be taken in any order, the clerkships in each block
must be taken together in a 6-month period of time. The Continuity of Care clerkship
-- in which students break from their other clerkship to spend a half
day each week for six months in a private practice office -- is completed
during the PRIMARY CARE BLOCK. At the student’s request, the requirement
for a one-month elective during the third year may be deferred into
the fourth year; in this case, the student must complete six months
of electives during the 11 month senior year (see below).
