1. Let There Be Sight

The newly established Ligon Research Center of Vision brings together specialists in ophthalmology, neurosurgery, neurosciences and engineering to create artificial vision. 

2. Non-Traditional Pacemakers Synchronize Ailing Hearts

Dr. Randy Lieberman is eliminating the risks of open-heart surgery for patients with advanced heart problems. A new type of pacemaker, or biventricular pacing, sends electrical charges to both lower lobes of the heart, allowing it to maintain a regular beat

3. Thumbing Through the Encyclopedia of Life

Genetics researcher Dr. Mark Hughes walks a fine line between the bench and the bedside, with his work on pre-implantation diagnosis and single-cell analysis. 

4. Prescribing Oxygen For Healing Hearts

Dr. Richard Spears is conducting clinical trials of aqueous oxygen, a newly patented technology that fosters healing in injured tissues of the body.

5. Hearing Preservation: WSU Researchers Investigate the Inner Ear

Faculty members in Wayne State's otolaryngology department are making improvements in many diverse areas of hearing research. Their studies have advanced the field and are contributing to clinical treatments.

6. Putting Out the Smoke: Researchers Seek Ways to Break Nicotine's Hold

Wayne State University's new Smoking and Illness Interdisciplinary Research Initiative consolidates and advances the smoking-related research being conducted at Wayne State and the Karmanos Cancer Institute.

7. Coordination Replaces Isolation: Biomedical Graduate Programs Offer Improved Career Application

Dr. Kenneth Palmer, assistant dean for graduate programs, is improving graduate education through a series of advances, including the new Interdisciplinary Biomedical Sciences (IBS) curriculum, non-traditional master's degree programs, and improved quality-of-life for doctoral and post-doctoral students.

8. Expansion and Progression: Wayne State Moves to a Hospital Near You

Throughout the past decade, the training campus of the Wayne State University School of Medicine has expanded. Now, nearly every region in the state has been incorporated into the WSU teaching program.

9. Students Create Healthy Communities

In an effort to be more active in solving public health problems, a group of WSU medical students formed a group called Students for Healthy Communities.

Dr. Ricardo Brown studies the effects of alcohol on the cardiovascular system.

As dean of the WSU School of Medicine, Dr. Crissman is moving health care forward.

Dr. Samuel Brooks, professor of biochemistry and molecular biology, celebrates 35 years of continuous funding.
