Scholarship established to honor Dr. Sokol

A portrait of Dr. Sokol was unveiled at the scholarship reception. It now hangs in Scott Hall.

Robert and Roberta Sokol were recently honored at a celebration of the establishment of the Robert J. Sokol, MD/Medical Alumni Association Endowed Prize Fund. This scholarship fund will provide lasting recognition of Dr. Sokol’s 10 years of service as dean of the Wayne State University School of Medicine.

Nearly $40,000 has been raised for the endowed prize fund--$10,000 of which was donated by the Medical Alumni Association. The rest was contributed from long-time friends and supporters of Dr. Sokol, many of whom presented fond memories and recollections in a touching tribute. Dr. Charles Whitten also unveiled a portrait of Dr. Sokol, which is now hanging near the dean’s office in Scott Hall.

The new scholarship award will be presented to a fourth year student or students whose professional activities and/or research accomplishments have brought distinction to themselves and the WSU School of Medicine.
