Dr. Dogariu named Assistant Dean for Admissions

Joseph Dogariu, PhD, has been named assistant dean for admissions for the Wayne State University School of Medicine. Dr. Dogariu was promoted from his position of university counselor and director of the School of Medicine office of admissions, where he has worked for more than 23 years. During this time, Dr. Dogariu has been highly involved in medical school admissions, counseling issues, policies and programs both at WSU and at regional and national levels. As assistant dean, Dr. Dogariu will oversee the entire process of student recruitment and selection for the School of Medicine. WSU annually receives more than 3,300 applications for its 256 spots for entering medical students. “Dr. Dogariu has had an active, leadership role in developing and implementing admissions policies and procedures for the school for many years,” said Dr. John Crissman, dean of the School of Medicine. “His service to the school as a counselor, lecturer and administrator has been extensive and outstanding.” Dr. Dogariu has represented the university with the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), and has served in leadership roles on a number of national committees and task forces. He has served as chair of the AAMC’s Central Region Committee on Admissions and is chair-elect of the Central Region Group on Student Affairs. He serves on the AAMC National Committee on Admissions and as a member of the Medical College Admissions Test Program Review Advisory Committee. A psychologist, Dr. Dogariu has an active counseling practice. He has presented extensively, in the US and internationally, on topics such as test anxiety, national admissions trends and counseling rejected applicants. He has been cited as an expert to local media on such topics as seasonal affective disorder and fear of flying. Dr. Dogariu received his BS from Michigan State University. He holds master’s degrees in both guidance and counseling and educational psychology from Wayne State University. He was granted a doctorate in educational psychology from WSU in 1991. He joined the WSU office of admissions in 1976. Dr. Dogariu holds a faculty appointment in the WSU department of family medicine.
