Inaugural lecture honors distinguished neurology alums On May 17, the School of Medicine and the Department of Neurology hosted the inaugural Maynard M. Cohen, MD, PhD, Endowed Lecture in Neurology. This year’s lecture on late onset myasthenia gravis was presented by Professor Johan Aarli, chair of neurology at the University of Bergen, Norway. Internationally renowned in his field, Dr. Cohen (MD, 1944) is the school’s most distinguished neurology alumnus and is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of modern neurology. From his days as a resident at the University of Minnesota in the late 1940s, Dr. Cohen was integral in the formation and development of the American Academy of Neurology. He served as president of the organization and received its first Distinguished Service Award in 1989. Dr. Cohen was also founding president of the Association of University Professors of Neurology and is the only non-Norwegian ever to receive honorary membership in the Norwegian Neurological Society.

In addition to being honored by the School of Medicine with the endowed lecture, Dr. Cohen has twice been a recipient of distinguished alumni awards from the school. The inaugural lecture took on added significance as it was held on Dr. Cohen’s 80th birthday and the Wayne State University Press announced a second printing of his book, A Stand Against Tyranny: Norway’s Physicians and the Nazis, chronicling the resistance of Norway’s physicians during the Nazi occupation of their country. At the reception following the lecture, University Press Director Arthur Evans presented Dean John Crissman with a newly printed second edition of the book for the dean’s office library.
