Honors

Seemant Chaturvedi, MD, associate professor of neurology, received an award for the best clinical poster at the International Headache Society in June, 1999. The paper, entitled “Increased Serotonin Synthesis in Migraine,” was co-authored by WSU faculty members: Diane Chugani, K. Niimura, M. Lee, Maher Fakhouri, Otto Muzik and Harry Chugani.

Zirka Clark, personnel director at the WSU School of Medicine, was presented with a certificate of appreciation from the faculty senate for her assistance on tenure and promotion issues over the years.

Kate Dimond Fitzgerald, Year IV medical student, received a new investigator award from the New Clinical Drug Evaluation Unit, sponsored by the National Institutes of Health. She also received the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Foundation Student Award Program Grant for the upcoming year.

Andy Gilbert, Year IV medical student, received the Robinson Cunningham Award from the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry for the best original research paper in child psychiatry. This is the first time a medical student has won the prize, which is generally awarded to a resident/fellow or junior faculty member.

Sheryl MacGillis, facility coordinator at the School of Medicine, has been named Building Coordinator of the Year by the Building Coordinators Advisory Group at Wayne State University.

Husseini Manji, MD, associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral neurosciences, received the Ziskind-Somerfeld Award from the Society of Biological Psychiatry for his work on “Protein Kinase C Signaling in the Brain: Molecular Transduction of Mood Stabilization in the Treatment of Manic Depressive Illness.”

Barry Rosen, PhD, professor and chair of biochemistry, was honored with Wayne State University’s Outstanding Graduate Mentor Award.

Andrew Sloan, MD, assistant professor of neurosurgery, has earned the 1999 Clinical Investigator Award from the American Brain Tumor Association.

Wei Xue, MD, PhD, dermatology resident, was honored by the American Academy of Dermatology with a Young Investigators in Dermatology Award. Dr. Xue’s research on “Molecular Studies of Pemphigus Autoantibody Induced Acantholysis” is sponsored by Dr. Ken Hashimoto, professor of dermatology.
