Class Notes
1953 John Bruni, MD, has recently retired from the
medicine after 43 years as a general practitioner. He spent most of his
years practicing medicine in Niles, IN. Freeman Wilner, MD, retired from medicine on April
30, 1999, after 41 years at William Beaumont Hospital, where he treated
cancer patients as chief of the division of hematology and oncology. 1954 Robert Borchak, MD, is president-elect for the
Wayne County Medical Society. 1958 Murray Janower, MD, has been elected president of
the Association of Program Directors in Radiology. He is currently chief
of radiology at St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester. 1962 Drake Duane, MD, is the current chairman of the
scientific advisory board for the National Dyslexia Research Foundation;
vice chairman of the professional advisory board for the National Center
for Learning Disabilities; and immediate past-president of the
International Academy for Research in Learning Disabilities. In
February, 1999, Drake was a guest lecturere for the Hong Kong
governement where he served as postgraduate training director in child
neurology/developmental pediatrics for Hong Kong child assessment
centers. In September this year, he gave a lecture on developmental
disorders influencing reading, attention and nonverbal learning at the
University of Uppsala in Sweden. 1964 Michael Rosenberg, MD, has been appointed Carrier
Medical Director, Medicare Part B, for the state of Michigan, for
Wisconsin Physicians Service Insurance Corporation. 1965 James Atkinson, MD, was the 1999 recipient of the
Liberty Bell Award for community service from the Barry County Bar
Association. He was honored for his commitment to Barry County, MI,
where he has been a long-time volunteer for the Hastings School system.
Dr. Atkinson is a founding member of the district’s Family Life
Advisory Committee, he serves as school physician, staffs school
sporting events and conducts annual fitness seminars. 1979 Gerald Shulman, MD, was the first recipient of the
Novartis Award in Diabetes in recognition of his innovative
patient-oriented research in diabetes mellitus. He is also professor of
medicine and physiology at Yale Medical School. 1981 Jerry Linenger, MD, PhD, has written a book, “Off
the Planet: My Five Months Aboard the Space Station Mir.” He is living
in Suttons Bay, MI. 1985 Bohdan Hrecznyj, MD, has joined the staff of
Bayhealth Medical Center in Dover, DE. He is medical director of the
child and adolescent services at the St. Jones Center and he is clinical
assistant professor of psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh School
of Medicine. 1990 Jennifer Engle, MD, is a board-certified vascular
surgeon in private practice at Royal Oak Beaumont, Providence and DMC
(Huron Valley and Grace). Her husband, Paul Hartley, is a symphony
musician and her daughter Olivia is 1 1/2. She says, “I think what
Mike Kelly did was awesome!” Darryl Lesoski, MD, says life in Traverse City, MI
has been great with wife Wendy and their three sons, Colin (5), Jacob
(3), and Grant (6 months). Darryl serves as medical director at
Munson’s Occupational Medicine Clinic and says he “enjoys the
challenges of hospital politics.” He tells classmates to give him a
call when they are in the area. Carmine Marchioli, MD, and his wife Janie are
living in DuBois, PA with their two children, Carl and Christine.
Carmine is the medical director at the Hahne Regional Cancer Center,
practicing hematology and oncology. He is also vice chief of medicine at
the DuBois Regional Medical Center. Alexis Michaels-Pozdol, MD, is working for an
emergency medicine group at The Detroit Medical Center. She and her
husband Joe are proud parents of Lauren (born in June, 1999), and
Jacquelin (21 months old). Michael Reines, MD, was elected to the board of the
Michigan Society of Anesthesiologists for a two-year term. He and his
wife, Kimiko Snider, MD, reside in Manistee, MI. Lori Walker, MD, and her husband Mark will have
their home featured on the Marshall Home Tour in September and have been
working to get it ready. Lori is chief of obstetrics at Oaklawn
Hospital. Nick is five year sold and starting kindergarten. Ellery
Christine is three and starts preschool in the fall. 1991 Abdhish Bhavsar, MD, finished a vitreoretinal
surgery fellowship at UCLA in 1997. While there, he met and married a
claucoma fellow, Mary Chang. They are practicing in Minneapolis, where
Abdhish became the state chair for the Diabetes 2000 program and helped
design the website for the Minnesota Academy of Ophthalmology (check it
out at www.MNeyeMD.org). He also teaches at the University of Minnesota.
Classmate Sajad Mir is also practicing in Minneapolis. Richard Boortz-Marx, MD, completed an
anesthesiology residency at the University of Minnesota after abandoning
academic neurology. He is now off to Mayo Clinic for a pain medicine
fellowship and has been on staff at Mayo from 1997 to 1999. He will be
on staff at the University of Minnesota doing 40 percent clinical
anesthesia, 40 percent pain medicine and 20 percent research related to
cancer pain and spinal cord stimulation for treatment of intractable
angina. William Cardasis, MD, celebrated three years of
marriage in June, 1999 and had a son, Stavros, in February, 1999.
William works at the Center for Forensic Psychiatry in Ann Arbor, MI,
and has a private practice in general and forensic psychiatry with an
academic appointment at the University of Michigan. Gracia Damian, MD, is practicing ob/gyn and living
in Lakeland Florida, just 30 minutes from Disneyworld where they go on a
regular basis. Their son Michael is five years old and he starts
kindergarten this year. Their second son Brian is 19 months old. She
says, “If you’re ever in Orlando, give us a ring--(941) 647-2312.” Dree Daugherty, MD, is practicing emergency
medicine in metropolitan Detroit. She and her husband Charlie have a
son, Mark, who was born in November, 1997. Anita Mandal, MD, completed an otolaryngology
residency in June, 1996, followed by a fellowship in facial plastic and
reconstructive surgery. She is in solo practice on the Carolina
coastline in the vicinity of Wilmington, NC. She was board certified in
otolaryngology in 1997 and is working on board certification in facial
plastic surgery. Eric Nelson, MD, completed residency training at
Rush Presbyterian St. Luke’s in Chicago and is currently working at
St. Luke’s Medical Center in Wisconsin. He and his wife have three
children: Emily (4), Sarah (3) and Benjamin (2). Chris Noah, MD, was in private practice in
Cheboygan, MI from July, 1993 to March 1998. Since, then, he has been a
full-time faculty member at a family practice residency in Midland, MI.
In June, 1999, he completed the Michigan State University Primary Care
Faculty Development Fellowship and feels very fortunate to have a
healthy family with wife, Ann, daughters Carly and Jane, and son Luke.
He says, “I still love all sports, but only have time to play
hoops.” James “Chip” Rosenbaum, MD, sends greetings
from Kalamazoo, MI. He is beginning his second year in his hometown,
practicing with Kalamazoo Anesthesiology, PC, which is a large group
practice with 30 Mds and 30 CRNAs. He has three boys, ages 2, 5, and 8.
He says, “I know where Todd Nowlen is!” Laura Schaub Gottfried, MD, completed her residency
training at Henry Ford Hospital and became board-certified in anatomic
and clinical pathology. She has been practicing on a part-time basis for
three years in Port Huron, MI, and will soon be taking a new part-time
position in her hometown, Traverse City, MI. She and her husband Gordon
enjoy their two children: Kyle (7) and Sarah (3) Paola Seidel, MD, is now in private solo practice in Dearborn, MI, after working as an academic attending physician at Grace Hospital, while earning board certification in physical medicine and rehabilitation, and later in electrodiagnostic medicine. She is also the mother of threee children: Madeleine (6), Adam (4), and Eric (10 months). 1992 Jennifer (Baustert) Hichme, MD, is joining Drs.
Tangalos and Kotsanis at Silver Pine Family Physicians in Shelby
Township and Clinton Township. John Blanchard, MD, will be opening an office in
Clarkston with two fellow residency classmates (Keith Christmon and Lori
Washe). Molly Boyle, MD, is an emergency physician who is
married to Bruno and has two sons, Ben (3) and Same (8 months). Molly
says, “Janette Tomlinson--where are you now? Please call.” Melissa Braunsteiner, MD, says her graduation was
delayed due to complications during her pregnancy, but she now has a
healthy 14-month old son named Tommy. She says, eventually, she and
Aaron (Class of ‘95) will move to North Carolina. Jamie Clancy, MD, and Lisa just celebrated five
years of marriage in May, 1999. Their daughter Olivia turns two in
September. “I think she is going to be a pop singer and dancer,” he
said. The Clancys live in St. Joseph, MI where Jamie does general
surgery. jclancy@parrett.net. Aleksander Cvetkovic, MD, will be joining his
stepfather, Dr. Nestor, in private practice in Troy, MI. Monte Harvill, MD, and his wife Karol Otteman have
two sons, Luke (3) and Logan (1). Karol is an ob/gyn at Providence
hsopital and Monte is at Harper Hospital in the vascular-interventional
radiology department. He says, “I’m still paying for suburban
rotations during med school with a permanent rotation at Harper.” Chris Kovander, MD, completed a plastic surgery
training at the Lahey Clinical in Boston and is joining a plastic
surgery group in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Michelle completed her MBA and
accepted a position with General Mills in research and new product
development. He says, “Looking forward to the long cold winters. P.S.
Send blankets.” Jeffrey Lord, MD, is still in the Navy and living
in Chesapeake, VA, very close to Joe Kochan. He is in his chief year of
general surgery at the brand new naval hospital in Portsmouth. He took
two years off to serve Uncle Sam, deployed, and completed one year of
plastics research at the Laser Center of Virginia. Kelly, his wife of 10
years, and their children, Zachery (8) and Abby (6), are all doing well.
They plan to spend two years in Guam. Steven McClelland, MD, has a busy internal medicine
practice in Birmingham, with two other associates. He and Molly will be
married nine years this December and they have two sons, Boyce (3 1/2)
and Ryan (1 1/2). Bruce Murray, MD, is married, completed an Air
Force stint in Florida and is now an assistant clinical professor of
emergency medicine at Spectrum Health Center in Grand Rapids, MI. He is
also a deputy Kent County medical examiner and a part-time helicopter
flight physician. Chris Stroud, MD, has completed both a sports
medicine and a foot/ankle fellowship. The Stroud family and their two
children, Michael and Amy, will be moving to Baltimore to begin
practicing this year. Ray Rudoni, MD, and Paula Rudoni, MD, have a new
home in West Bloomfield and a two-year-old daughter, Abby. Ray remains
on staff at Royal Oak Beaumont as an emergency physician and Paula is
enjoying family practice in Warren, where she is part of the Bon Secours
Health System. Aaron Scott, MD, has settled into a
general-vascular surgery private practice with three partners in
Paradise Valley, Phoneix, AZ. His wife Suti of six years is an
anesthesia resident at Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, AZ. Brian Seifman, MD, and his wife Audrey had a baby
boy in October, 1998. James Valice, MD, is practicing ophthalmology at
The Laser Eye Site in Macomb County. 1993 Scott Anderson, MD, has joined the staff at Family
Doctors of Howard in Green Bay, WI. Steven Fite, MD, is practicing opthalmology at The
Laser Eye Site in Macomb County, MI. Marilyn Vermeesch, MD, is doing a combined hospital
clinic practice in internal medicine and pediatrics. She asks classmates
to email her at PMMV@xpressweb.com. 1994 Joe Chomchai, MD, has joined the Central Michigan
Healthcare System as an ear, nose and throat specialist. William Mallon, MD, finished an ophthalmology
residency at the University of Tennessee in 1998 and an oculoplastics
fellowship in June, 1999. He started at the Jacksonville Eye Center in
July. Elizabeth Tree-LeVasseur, MD, is working full-time
as a family practice physician in Whitehall, MI doing ob and family
medicine. She has a five-year-old son, a two-year old daughter, and a
six-month-old daughter. They have lived on White Lake for two years. 1995 Maher Al-Sheikh, MD, finished a residency in family
practice at Grace-DMC and took a position with Health South, where he
was moonlighting as a resident. In January, 1999, he took over a solo
practice from a retiring physician in Okemos, MI. He and his wife Sarah
have a son, Maher Jr. (3 1/2 years old), and a daughter, Mary Margaret
(1 1/2). Leland Babitch, MD, is living in the St. Louis area
and is working in general pediatrics. He and his wife Chere Carpenter
plan to move back to the Detroti area in approximately two years. Leland
hopes to get a degree in medical administration and move into hospital
or insurance administration. Michael Euwema, MD, is living in Japan, serving as
a Navy flight surgeon for a helicopter squadron there. In April, 1999,
he married Danielle Williams, a Navy nurse he met during an internship.
They will be moving back to the United States next year and Mike hopes
to complete a residency in emergency medicine. Andrew Haidukewych, MD, is currently serving as
chief resident in general surgery at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in
Pontiac, MI. In July, 2000, he begins a plastic and reconstructive
surgery fellowship at Ohio State University. Elizabeth Hall, MD, completed her final year of
residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation and served as chief
resident at Sinai Hospital in The Detroit Medical Center. She has joined
a large private practice and will primarily be at Grace Hospital in the
inpatient rehabilitation unit. She resides in Novi with her husband,
Kevin, and her dogs Boomer and Jasper. Tim Hoffmann, MD, finished his residency and is
working with a group of internists and a family practice doctor. He has
his own new office, which is a satellite office in a small rural town
named Tekonska, halfway between Marshall and Coldwater, MI. He says,
“I’m high on the learning curve and learning those farming ways!” Neil Jaddou, MD, graduated from a DMC family
practice residency in June, 1999 and will begin a solo family practice
in Lapeer, MI with the Genesys Health System. He enjoyed his summer,
traveling to Europe. He tells classmates to keep in touch: NJaddou@home.com. Jodi Michaelson, MD, and husband Jeff, MD, have a
son, Connor Jacob, who was born on November 12, 1998. Jodi is joining
the ob/gyn staff at Providence Hospital. Jeff will begin a sports
medicine fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic in August, 2000. Piero Simone, MD, finished an ophthalmology
residency at Beaumont Hospital. He is now going into solo ophthalmology
practice in Warren, MI, and will be on staff at Royal Oak and Troy
Beaumont hospitals. He lives in Clawson with his wife, Lucy, and
15-month-old daughter Madeline. Stephen Williams, MD, finished a chief resident
year in internal medicine/primary care at the University of Rochester.
He moved back to Michigan where he accepted a position at Troy Beaumont.
He says, “My son Mason is growing like a weed and we were just
thrilled to learn we are expecting another.” 1996 Mark Schwartz, MD, recently completed a residency
at the Marshfield Clinic/St. Joseph’s Hospital in MI, and is remaining
in the Marshfield Clinic system to practice internal medicine. 1998 Dawn Duane, MD, is in Phoenix completing two years
of her pediatric neurology residency at St. Joseph’s. Her husband is
Tom Tarshis, class of 1999. 1999 Tom Tarshis, MD, is completing a rotation with the Arizona Dystonia Institute, under the direction of Drake Duane, MD, class of 1962. His wife is Dawn Duane, class of 1998. |
