Michael Herbert |
Michael Herbert has assumed the position of chief administrative officer for the Wayne State University School of Medicine effective September 8, 1998. He comes to WSU from the University of Michigan where he served as director of administration for the department of surgery and associate director of surgical services at U-M Hospitals since 1991.
Prior to his career in the academic arena, Herbert spent 13 years in health care administration at Veterans Administration (VA) hospitals across the country, ultimately rising to the rank of associate deputy director of the VAs central region, and acting director of the Ann Arbor VA Medical Center.
"I am very confident that we will all benefit greatly from Mike Herberts leadership, expertise and skills," said Robert Sokol, MD, dean of the WSU School of Medicine.
An alumnus of the University of Vermont, where he earned his bachelors and masters degrees, Herbert was a doctoral candidate at the University of Virginia when he was recruited to serve as a consultant on Department of Defense projects.
He is a member of professional and management associations including the Academic Practice Assembly of the Medical Group Management Association. He has been awarded extensively throughout his career in the public sector, and is a four-time recipient of the VA Special Contribution Award, and a four-time recipient of the Directors Commendation.
