Dr. Sloan is participating in a national registry to track trends in glioma. |
Wayne State University (WSU) is one of the top-five centers in the country recruiting patients for the Glioma Outcomes (GO) Project, a prospective study of patients undergoing treatment for malignant brain tumors. Leading this effort at WSU is Andrew Sloan, MD, assistant professor of neurosurgery.
"Although tumor registries do exist, they do not follow patients over the course of their disease and they do not include patient-reported data concerning health status or quality of life," said Dr. Sloan. This new, more collaborative initiative will allow researchers to track trends in glioma care including risk factors, diagnostic approaches, resource utilization, treatment methods and outcomes. "Because glioma is a rare disease, the best way to gather collective information is through multicenter projects, like this one," said Dr. Sloan.
"The primary intent of this study is to create benchmarks so patients and physicians can work together to make educated decisions about treatment options available for patients with glioma," said Dr. Sloan. Enrollment began in 1998 and researchers will conduct a two-year follow-up for patients who have undergone surgical treatment.
