Honors

Cheryl Bailey, Year II medical student, has been awarded a James Comer Minority Research Fellowship from the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. This award provides a $2,500 stipend and all-expense paid trip to present her work at the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry meeting in October in California. Bailey’s advisor is Dr. David Rosenberg.

Sander Breiner, MD, assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral neurosciences, received the 1998 Gradiva Award from the National Association for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis and World Association for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis. He received the award for having the best article, entitled "Deficit-Brain? Ego? Social?"

Harry Chugani, MD, professor of pediatrics, neurology, and radiology, is being honored by Sesame Street Parents magazine and Children’s Television Workshop with its first annual Sunny Days Award, which recognizes individuals who have improved and brightened young children’s lives.

John Flack, MD, professor and associate chair of internal medicine and professor of community medicine, received the Dr. Daniel D. Savage Award from the Association of Black Cardiologists. He was honored for his contributions to research which improve the quality of care for African Americans with cardiovascular disease.

James Gell, MD, associate professor of ob/gyn, received the Outstanding District Service Award from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists at its annual clinical meeting.

Susan Hendrix, DO, assistant professor of ob/gyn, has been selected to represent the Women’s Health Commission as a "30 Years 30 Women" award recipient.

Yassar Kanawaiti, MD, child psychiatry resident, has been selected to receive an Eli Lilly Pilot Research Award from the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. She will receive grant money and have the opportunity to present her work to the academy. Her advisor is Dr. David Rosenberg.

Kathleen McCarroll, MD, associate professor of radiology, has been accepted as a fellow for the 1998-99 Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) Program for Women.

Donal O’Leary, PhD, associate professor of physiology, was one of six faculty members to receive the 1998 Wayne State University President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. He was honored at the annual academic convocation.

Arthur Porter, MD, professor and chair of radiation oncology, has been honored with the Healthcare Executive of the Year Award from the American Academy of Medical Administrators.

Ananda Prasad, MD, professor of internal medicine, received the 1998 Special Recognition Award for Professional Achievement from the Wayne County Medical Society.

David Rosenberg, MD, associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral neurosciences, won the Psychopharmacologist Competition of the International Congress of Neuropsychopharmacology.
