Ishtiaq Ahmad, PhD, research associate in the Laboratory of Cellular and Molecular Cerebral Ischemia, has been invited to present "Metabotropic Glutamate Receptors Modulate Intracellular Calcium Through the Metabotropic Receptor Subtype 2 and Calcium Induced Calcium Release" at the American Heart Association’s Conference on Stroke.

 

Ayad Al-Katib, MD, associate professor of internal medicine, was awarded a two-year National Institutes of Health grant to study "Phase II Trial of Bryostatin 1 and 2CDA in Relapsed CLL."

 

Rodrigo Andrade, PhD, professor of psychiatry and behavioral neurosciences, was appointed to the Neuropharmacology and Neurochemistry Review Committee of the National Institute of Mental Health.

 

Richard Balon, MD, professor of psychiatry and behavioral neurosciences, has become a member of the editorial boards of two journals: Primary Psychiatry and Psychiatrie (Praha). He is also the program chair of the American Academy of Clinical Psychiatrists, Inc. and he was appointed to the editorial board of the American College of Psychiatrists’ Psychiatry Residency In-Training Examination, and the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step Two Material Development Committee for Behavioral Science.

 

Bruce Becker, MD, associate professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation, co-authored a book entitled Comprehensive Aquatic Therapy, which describes the science behind aquatic therapy’s healing effects and how it is used to treat various illnesses and injuries.

 

Sander Breiner, MD, assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral neurosciences, presented "Adult Effects of Childhood Abuse" at the Northville State Hospital and "Psychoanalysis-How Should It Be Done and By Whom?" at the 6th annual meeting of the International Federation for Psychoanalytical Education." In October he presented "Problems of Early Family Life" at the Shang-Hai Mental Health Center.

 

Seemant Chaturvedi, MD, presented a lecture entitled "Trends and Outcomes in Carotid Artery Surgery" at Rush Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago. He presented "The Asymptomatic Carotid Surgery Trial" at the 1997 North American Stroke Meeting in Montreal, and he lectured on "Positron Emission Tomography Studies of Migraine Headache" at Yale University.

 

Julius Combs, MD, assistant professor of ob/gyn, has been selected by the Academy for International Health Studies to join a select delegation to study the German healthcare system.

 

Michael Diamond, MD, professor of ob/gyn, co-chaired a conference entitled "Postoperative Surgical Adhesion Prevention" in Baltimore.

 

Steven Dutcher, DO, PhD, neurological surgery resident, and Daniel Michael, MD, PhD, assistant professor of neurological surgery and anatomy/cell biology, presented "Temporal Patterns of Heat Shock Protein 70 mRNA and Protein Expression Following Human Traumatic Brain Injury" at the 4th International Neurotrauma Symposium in Seoul, South Korea.

 

Robert Frank, MD, professor of ophthalmology, was lead author on a study "An Aldose Reductase Inhibitor and Aminoguanidine Prevent Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Expression in Rats With Long-Term Galactosemia," which was published in Archives of Ophthalmology.

 

David Fromm, MD, professor and chair of surgery, has been appointed a voting member of the American Board of Medical Specialties.

 

Thomas Gentile, Jr., adjunct clinical assistant dean, has been named to the board of trustees of the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates. He has also been invited to serve on the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.

 

Kenneth Ginsburg, MD, associate professor of ob/gyn, was accepted into the APGO Scholar program, a competetive program that trains physician educators in ob/gyn.

 

Morris Goodman, PhD, professor of anatomy and cell biology, has been awarded a grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation to host a conference on "Humankind’s Evolutionary Roots: Our Place in Nature," in conjunction with the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Dr. Goodman will be a featured speaker and scientific program coordinator for the conference which will be held at the Field Museum in Chicago, October 9-11, 1998.

 

Murali Guthikonda, MD, assistant professor of neurosurgery, was the course director for "Skull Base Techniques 1997: Practical Applications in Neurosurgical Practice," which was held at the Wayne State University School of Medicine.

 

William Guy, MD, resident in psychiatry and behavioral neurosciences, has been selected by the American Psychiatric Association to participate in the Program for Minority Research Training in Psychiatry.

 

Lisa Guyot, MD, neurological surgery resident, and Daniel Michael, MD, PhD, assistant professor of neurological surgery and anatomy/cell biology, presented "Cerebral Monitoring Devices: Analysis of Complications" at the 10th International Symposium on Intracranial Pressure and Brain Injury Monitoring in Williamsburg, VA.

 

Lewis Jones, Jr., MD, assistant professor of radiology, has been appointed physician consultant to the Michigan Department of Community Health in Lansing.

 

Stephen Krawetz, PhD, associate professor of ob/gyn and the Center for Molecular Medicine and Genetics, was a collaborator on the development of MAR-Finder, a computer-based gene sequence analysis tool to identify DNA regions involved in attachment to the nuclear matrix. Dr. Krawetz used this tool to confirm the presence of a gene that other sequence analysis methods failed to detect. With the MAR-Finder, he found the matrix association region and then identified the new gene, which is involved in human cytokine-mediated signal transduction.

 

Gabriel Lasker, PhD, professor emeritus of anatomy/cell biology and adjunct professor of anthropology, was appointed to the Comite’ Asesor of Antropologia Fisica Latinoamericano and he was elected to the executive board of the Central States Anthropological Society. Dr. Lasker was also appointed to the editorial board of the Annals of Human Biology, which is published in England.

 

Robert Lisak, MD, professor and chair of neurology, has been named editor-in-chief for the Journal of Neurological Sciences.

 

Patricia LoRusso, DO, assistant professor of internal medicine, has been appointed to the National Cancer Institute’s Breast Cancer Progress Review Group.

 

Jeanne Lusher, MD, professor of pediatrics, spoke at a National Institutes of Health (NIH) workshop on Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura and was an invited speaker at an FDA/NIH workshop on von Willebrand factor concentrates. Dr. Lusher served as a member of the organizing committee and speaker at the 4th International Hemostasis Symposium in Denmark, and as an invited speaker at the Second International Symposium on Immune Tolerance Induction for Inhibitor Antibodies Against Clotting Factors, held in Germany.

 

Ken Maiese, MD, associate professor of neurology, anatomy/cell biology, Center for Molecular and Cellular Toxicology, and the Center for Molecular Medicine and Genetics, presented "Metabotropic Glutamate Receptors: The Molecular Mechanisms for Novel Clinical Therapy" at the Johnson and Johnson Focused Giving Symposium.

 

Ramzi Mohammad, PhD, assistant professor of internal medicine, was invited to present "The Role of Bryostatin 1 In 2-CdA Resistant B-Cell Line: Mechanism of Resistance and Response" at the Leukemia Society of America’s annual meeting in Washington, D.C.

 

Paul Montgomery, PhD, professor and chair of immunology/microbiology, has been appointed to the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Test Material Development Committee for a three-year term.

 

Arthur Porter, MD, professor and chair of radiation oncology, has been elected president of the newly merged Michigan and Indiana divisions of the American Cancer Society. He has also been elected to the National Board of the American Cancer Society.

 

Ashok Sarnaik, MD, professor of pediatrics, has been appointed as a member of the USMLE Step 2 Test Material Development Committee for Pediatrics and the National Board of Medical Examiners Pediatrics Test Committee.

 

Krishna Sawhney, MD, associate professor of surgery, has been appointed to the Board of the American Medical Political Action Committee of the American Medical Association.

 

Michelle TenBroeke, research assistant in the Laboratory of Cellular and Molecular Cerebral Ischemia, was invited to present "Molecular Reversal of Nitric Oxide Induced Programmed Cell Death" at the American Heart Association’s Conference on Stroke.

 

Andrea Vincent, PhD, research associate in the Laboratory of Cellular and Molecular Cerebral Ischemia, was invited to present "Active DNA Repair During Nitric Oxide Induced Neurodegeneration" at the American Heart Association’s Conference on Stroke

 

Honor Wolfe, MD, assistant professor of ob/gyn, has been elected to the CREOG Educational Committee, which promotes excellence in residency education and obstetrics and gynecology.

 

Rosalie Young, PhD, associate professor of community medicine, authored two chapters about the absorption of former Soviet physicians into the U.S. medical system. The chapters, "A Study of Soviet Immigrant Physicians in the United States," and "Immigrant Physicians in a Saturated Market," were published in the book Immigrant Physicians: Former Soviet Doctors in Israel, Canada and the United States.
