Medical students win research awards

The 1997 Medical Student Research Symposium held in November awarded first-place honors to Paul Steffan and an honorable mention to Joseph Roebuck for their oral research presentations.

First-place winner Paul Steffan, Year I, presented "Identification of Candida Species by Randomly Amplified Polymorphic DNA Fingerprinting of Colony Lysates." His faculty sponsor was Dr. Robert Akins, associate professor of biochemistry.

Joseph Roebuck, Year II, won an honorable mention for his presentation, "Towards a Non-Invasive Means of Diagnosing Breast Cancer." His faculty sponsor was Dr. R.E. Lenkinski.

Steffan will be the WSU medical student representative when he attends the National Student Research Forum at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston in April, 1998. At this forum, students present their research and have it reviewed by scientists and peers from around the country. Also representing WSU at the forum are graduate students Ming Fang and Joanne Davis, who took first place honors at the Graduate Student Research Day.
