
The Committee on the Status of Women at the Wayne State University School of Medicine is holding a special symposium on "Career Issues of Women in Academia." It will be held Wednesday, September 16, beginning at 9 am.
Honorary co-chairs Pamela Reid and Mildred Jeffrey will open the program and featured speaker Karen Holbrook, PhD, will provide the keynote address. Dr. Holbrook is vice president for research at the University of Florida. She will offer poignant advice for women in medical academics.
Three workshops will be offered on the following topics: The Art of Self Promotion, Making the Most of Mentors and Informal Networks, and Time Management and Organizational Skills. Presenters are: Marilyn Laken, PhD, from the Medical University of South Carolina; Leah Dickstein, MD, from the University of Louisville; and Jeanette Mladenovic, MD, from Presbyterian St. Luke Hospital in Denver, Colo. The workshops will conclude in time for conference participants to join the Deans Distinguished Lecture, which will be presented at 4 pm by Dr. David Satcher, US surgeon general.
