Stephen Jay Gould lectures on evolution, creationism

gould.jpg (19505 bytes)Critically acclaimed evolutionary biologist, Stephen Jay Gould, will present a lecture and moderate a colloquium at Wayne State University on Wednesday, September 16, in conjunction with the week’s presidential inauguration events.

He will moderate the symposium, entitled "Concepts of Time: An Interdisciplinary Perspective," at 3 pm in the Community Arts Auditorium. Gould will participate as a panelist and provide a response to other viewpoints. Later that evening, he will be the featured speaker at a 7:30 pm lecture on "The Fact of Evolution and the Politics of Creationism."

An acclaimed interpreter of science and its complex social consequences, Gould has made provocative presentations and arguments for such topics as racial equality, theories on the nature of excellence, the origins of mankind, and Darwin’s revolutionary breakthrough in thought. Gould is especially interested in mathematical problems of growth and form applied to the evolution of lineages. He has taught at Harvard University since 1967 and is currently professor of geology, professor of zoology, and curator for invertebrate paleontology in Harvard’s Museum of Comparative Zoology.

The author of more than 200 consecutive essays for his Natural History Magazine column, "This View of Life," Gould is also a contributor to Discover Magazine. He has served as the president of the Paleontological Society and the Society for the Study of Evolution.

Gould’s visit is sponsored by the Wayne State University Graduate School. For more information about the day’s events, please call (313) 577-1335.
