Comprehensive diabetes center established at WSU

With $3 million in state appropriations, the School of Medicine is proud to announce the establishment of the Wayne State University Morris Hood, Jr. Comprehensive Diabetes Center. This advanced diabetes research center will support, sustain and improve the superior diabetes research and patient care that is currently ongoing at the WSU School of Medicine.

Under the direction of George Grunberger--Henry L. Brasza Professor and director of the Center for Molecular Medicine and Genetics, professor of internal medicine, and director of the Center for Clinical Research--the Wayne State diabetes program was awarded a vote of support and confidence by Governor John Engler who signed Senate Bill 905 to grant funding for the establishment of the center. "This is a great asset for our city, state and entire community," said Dr. Grunberger. "This funding will allow us to fully integrate our services to provide the latest technology, the quickest advances and the best treatment options for the patients we serve."

The center will be named for State Representative Morris Hood who has been a strong supporter, advocate and friend of WSU during his 28 years of public service.

An announcement and naming ceremony will be held on Wednesday, September 16 in Scott Hall as part of a legislative breakfast and briefing. For more information about the Comprehensive Diabetes Center, call the Center for Molecular Medicine and Genetics at (313) 577-5323.
