Arthur Porter, MD, professor and chair of radiation oncology, has been named associate dean of health care initiatives at the Wayne State University School of Medicine and senior vice president at The Detroit Medical Center (DMC). His responsibilities include enhancing relationships with physicians, assuring a strong, broadly distributed primary care program, and development of a management services organization that will provide support services for WSU/DMC physicians.

"Dr. Porter has led major achievements in research, departmental administration, business ventures and physician relations. We are thankful for his continued service and are proud to have him lead Wayne State’s network, affiliation, and faculty practice efforts," said Robert Sokol, MD, dean of the School of Medicine.

Dr. Porter earned his bachelor’s, master’s and medical degrees from Cambridge University in the United Kingdom. He then served as chief of the department of radiation oncology at the London Regional Cancer Center and chairman of the department of oncology at Victoria Hospital in London, Ontario, Canada. He joined WSU/DMC in 1991, where his most recent appointments included DMC radiation oncologist-in-chief and director of clinical care at the Karmanos Cancer Institute.

"I am truly delighted to be in a position to continue to serve Wayne State University," said Dr. Porter. "The challenges to academic health care are immense and we need to be positioned to respond effectively to health care opportunities."
